What is Punctuation? Definition : A set of Symbols those enhance the meaning and provide clear interpretation of a sentence are called punctuations. These symbols are called "punctuation marks".

Punctuations are important construct in English language. As we know there are verbal and written english. When we talk to another person, we use gestures and body languages to make our point clear to audience where they can clearly see it. But in written english, how the author will convey the same message like questioning, explaining, ending of a sentence, short pause, long pause, excitement and dialogues? Here the writer has to take help of punctuations for make his reader visualise what he penned.
Example: I like cooking, cats and drawing. In this sentence "," is a puntuation mark. Without punctuation mark it reads as "I like cooking cats and drawing.
Punctuation marks with Examples
Let's understand the punctuation marks with examples to clear the concept.
Example 1: Full stop/Period (.)
Full stop is a puctuation mark that looks like a dot (.) which use to end the sentence and adds the pause before begining next sentence. This also used in abbreviations.
- Jack studies in class 1.
- Mr. James visited our library.
Example 2: Question Mark (?)
Question mark looks like "?" which is used when someone asks a question.
- What is your name?
- Red or Black?
Example 3: Exclamation mark (!)
Exclamation mark looks like "!" which is used if writer wanted to high light excitement or passion.
- Wow! This is great.
- Hi! How are you?.
Example 4: Comma (,)
Comma looks like "," which indicates a pause in a sentence. It also separate the simillar words.
- She likes swimming, drawning and singing.
- The book is written in English, French, German and Chinese laguages.
Example 5: Semicolon (;)
Semicolon looks like ";" which indicates a long pause in a sentence. Hence fuction wise semicolon is more than a comma and less than period. This is used to join two logically connected sentences before we make a complete hard stop.
- He is not feeling well; however, he does not want to miss the class.
- Kane saw a beautiful peacock; it was dancing in the rain.
- Square tiles are preferred.
Example 6: Colon (:)
Colon looks like ":" which indicates follow up instruction ahead or provides more detail to the first clause in a sentence.
- You have two choices: Get up early or miss the train..
- There are three types of sports in triathlon: swimming, cycling, and running.
Example 7: Apostrophe (')
Apostrophe looks like (') which indicates possessive or contraction in a sentence.Contraction is omission of certain letters or sound in a word.
- Ruby's book is in the bag.
- He doesn't like that cake.
Example 8: Inverted comma/Quotation mark (" ")
Inverted comma is also called Quotation mark. Quotation mark looks like (" ") which indicates actual dialogue by a person or emphasize certain words in a sentence.
- He said, "I love you".
- "Come here quickly," Sam whispered.
Example 9: Bracket or Parenthesis "( )"
Bracket comma is also called Parenthesis. Parenthesis looks like "( )" which indicates addtion of more information to the word or phrase in a sentence.
- Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (popularly known as Gandhi) believed in non-violence.
- I practice baseball (my favorite sport) five sessions a week.
Example 10: Hyphen (-)
Hyphen looks like "-" which indicates a compound word or compound modifier.
- This is a pet-friendly hotel.
- His son-in-law is a teacher
- He is the editor-in-chief of this news paper.
Example 10: Slash (/)
Slash is also called oblique. Slash looks like "/" which mostly replaces "or" in a sentence.
- You can use credit/debit card to purchase.
- You can say yes/no for this option.
Example 10: Ellipsis ( ... )
Ellipsis is represented in three dots. Ellipsis looks like "..." which represents omission of words in a sentence. This invokes thought of the reader to add more information to the context which is left unsaid.
